Experts from WHO report Cell phones possibly cause cancer

Over the year's cell phones have moved closer to microwave oven frequencies to increase system capacity and G3,G4 ... data rates.   Average transmit power can be as high as 1 Watt at full power (far from cell tower) with peak power is many times this level is significant at microwave frequencies[1].  The health risks from cell phones has been will known for at least 20 years at lower frequencies. [4]  We are not sure why it has taken 20 years to tell us this? 

100% increase in Rare Brain Cancer

Cell phone has in large part replaced land lines, and usage has dramatically increased a 30 minute call or longer is not uncommon.  All radiation damage is cumulative extended talk times, and greater usage equals a larger dose and increased risk.

Cell phone radiation interferes with Normal DNA repair

Our cells ordinarily repair DNA damage from background radiation and chemicals in a few second to a few minutes under normal conditions.  Even under "normal" conditions this process fails and cancers result.  However, cells subjected to an abnormal intense locally applied electromagnetic field for a long periods would be left with scrambled and un-repaired DNA and chromosomes.  Leaving some small but statistical significant number of un-repaired  DNA other damages that will lead to extra cell deaths and cancer. We are continually hit by low level background radiation (cosmic rays, natural isotopes) constantly producing free radicals or ions that damage cellular machinery oxidation or rusting if you will. Update:

In reviewing my HTC Safety and Regulatory guide (publication 91H01547-00M) the unit emitted 1.44 W/kg@1g (head) with a upper Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) limit of 1.6W/kg.  This would be typical of most cell phones all being made to the same international standards.  In reading the fine print the HTC unit meets the standard only if held 1.5 cm from the body.  People often in noisy areas press the phone to the ear thus exceeding this generous limit.  Most cell phones locate the antenna toward the top of the phone, avoid placing fingers in this area.  If you must use you phone without a blue-tooth or wired head set HOLD the phone away from your head.  Hold phone by edges to reduce loading by your hand.  This will also extend your battery life.  If you cover the phone with your hand the phone will increase the transmit power to compensate from hand loading.  The use of a head set will reduce your exposure by about 95%. 

Cell Phone Radiation Scrambles Normal cell division

Cells are constantly dividing particularly your skin, young growing children and a baby.   Cells subjected to RF fields would accumulate small amounts of damage or from interference with the cellular replication process.  It would logically follow that prolonged exposure to intense radiation would be a health risk.  Creating a small but statistical significant number of scrambled chromosomes other damages that could lead to cancer year later.  The cell phone was design for short conversations not an hour long brain and inner-ear bakes.  I personally have felt ear discomfort from cell the RF exposure from long winded conversations.

Cell Phone Microwave Radiation Enhance Effects of Chemical Damage.

Hundreds of carcinogenic chemicals in our environment such as fluorite in the drinking water, arsenic added to chicken feeds, solvents, etc..... all are damaging to DNA and cellular machinery.   Chemicals, ionizing radiation all are constantly pounding our cells and DNA our body is working at overtime to repair the assault.  All chemical reactions involve movement of electrons to make and break chemical bonds.  Electrons and ions are tugged under the influence of applied electric and magnetic fields.  This is how your micro-wave oven works rapidly flipping polarized water molecules friction creates heating. 

Cell RF Radiation Amplifies Effects of Natural Radiation Damage.

Cell phones operate like pulsed radar devices

To meet greater bandwidth required for video phones have moved into radar microwave frequencies.  All cell phones use digital pulsed modulation methods( like radar) that have high peak transmit power levels.  In a 2001 Dr Neil Cherry of Human Sciences Department Lincoln University, New Zealand [4] his report shows that DNA damage occurs at levels 250 time lower than limits.  Evidence of brain cancer from occupational exposure to pulsed microwaves from a police radar. [4]

Exposure to RF/MW is consistently associated with headaches, fatigue, loss of concentration and memory loss. These symptoms have been called "The Radiofrequency Sickness Syndrome" or "Microwave Syndrome". These symptoms are now shown with cell phone use in a significant dose-response manner. [3]

How to protect yourself?

The short answer is minimizing your exposure.  This is applicable to ALL types of radiation if it is cell Phone, UV (ultra violet), particle (radon) and security x-rays.  Cell phone micro-waves are very low energy when compared to Airport scanner X-rays are much higher energy electromagnetic tanning and burning UV radiation. The x-ray dose to the skin is substantial and very penetrating standard sun screen offers little protection from x-ray.  Protection is recommended.  

A)  TIME:  Reduce your time in the field.  ( Shorter talk time, and lower frequency of use)

B) DISTANCE:  Increase your distance, intensity falls as a square of the distance.  (Move away from your body)

C) SHIELDING:  Place shielding between the source and you.

Common sense would tell you putting a micro-wave transmitter to your head could be a problem. As a side note I know people that worked for Motorola doing cell phone exposure testing with the original 800 MHz system in the 1980's, and they would not be near one.  Blue-tooth headset or speaker phones are the best solution to reduce cell phone exposure.  Move the phone a few feet way when in use and move phone outside of you car while transmitting.   

The shift to microwave frequencies increased capacity and lowered price now 100 of millions are using a cell phone as an essential communication device.  People have shifted from an occasional use to be primary.  The cancer risk is low but finite we unfortunately will see in the months and years to come cancer for many.
