FOIA request reveals new cancer cases
Large number of TSA workers[6] have developed cancer, have suffered strokes and suffered from heart disease. However, the workers have been informed that the TSA systems comply with federal regulations in terms of radiation doses. Even though TSA employees identified radiation exposure to these cancer clusters, they were still denied the use of dosimeters which are devices worn on one's person, which assess the level of radiation exposure. (Since TSA will not approve of the use of dosimeters, one has to come to the conclusion that they want to avoid responsibility. It would be prudent for expecting mothers, security/radiation workers, flight crews and frequent flyers to use a dosimeter . Fortunately new easy to use instant reading dosimeters are available today.
Has TSA been keeping workers in the dark?
From a resent Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) it appears that TSA is working to avoid publicity around their workers developing cancer due to their close proximity to the radiation blasting full body scanners. Historically TSA staff working around scanners and x-ray luggage machines were issued dosimeters and were quietly withdrawn years ago. Perhaps this a high tech version of "don't look don't tell" or "don't measure don't Report". At the same time personnel working for scanner manufactures all wear dosimeters.
Security Staff are radiation workers.
According to Johns Hopkins University measurements [1] the significant scattered dose puts workers over federal limits covered under Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 835, Occupational Radiation Protection. [2]
The Dose is still not known
Cancer Clusters Discovered
There is new evidence that cancer clusters are developing around TSA workers who work with the full body scanners. The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) says they have evidence that the Department of Homeland security failed to evaluate risk levels from airport body scanners. [3] A study from the National Institute of Standards and Technology warns TSA airport screeners to avoid standing next to the body scanners. Wearing radiation protective clothing also reduces exposure for travelers and security staff.
Boston has been testing the scanners for almost a decade
The scanners have been operating in Boston since 2002, so that's plenty of time for exposure over many years to have manifested in cancer. Due to medical privacy laws details of the specific cancers are not known at this time. The scanners' radiation, which typically targets the skin, breast, testicals and the muscles right beneath it, would most logically be tied to a common type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma.
Security Screeners Not fully Informed
This writer is convinced! True story as I was going through security in the Indianapolis (IND) airport earlier this year, I noticed that not everyone was forced to be irradiated. Every other person went through the body scanner, the other person was directed through the metal detector. The gentleman in front of me was told to go through the scanner. He said he did not want radiation from the full body scanner. The TSA worker incorrectly said that there was no radiation when using the device. The gentleman argued another minute, the TSA worker continued to claim that there was no danger from radiation. The gentleman finally agreed to go through the scanner. I was fortunate enough to go through the metal detector. It appears that the TSA workers are being misinformed and therefore inadvertently misinforming the traveling public.

[6] Complaints from the Boston airport security workers date back to May 2010 and that the TSA has responded to them. From the EPIC FOIA May 2010 document from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) that states in reference to the "cancer cluster" claimed by the Boston union that "15-25 cases of cancer over nine years among approximately 1100 employees are not an excess of cancer." NIOSH states that "it is unlikely that the cancers reported are associated with exposures from the TSA baggage screening machines at [Boston Logan International Airport]."
