It is a known fact that exposing the human body to ionizing radiation can cause cell mutations that may develop into cancer.  The question arises then, can ionizing radiation cause breast cancer? 


 

It is a known fact that exposing the human body to ionizing radiation can cause cell mutations that may develop into cancer.  The question arises then, can ionizing radiation cause breast cancer? 

The experts at Cornell state, "Yes" and they note "female breast tissue is highly susceptible to radiation effects."    However, they also state that the possible hazard from mammograms "should not be a factor in individual decisions to undergo this procedure.  The same is true for most diagnostic x-ray procedures."  The Cornell experts continue, "Nonetheless, unnecessary radiation exposures should be avoided and continued vigilance is required to ensure that the benefits associated with specific procedures outweigh the future risks."
