The short answer is No.  Metal detectors use two primary detection methods "eddy current" and field distortion from iron or ferromagnetic materials.   Our patent pending shield is made from 8 layers of proprietary powdered elements suspended in polymers designed to minimize eddy currents, therefore it not easily detected.  Second, the shield is designed free of toxic Lead (Pb) and field distorting ferromagnetic materials.   The shield was specifically design to not interfere with conventional metal detectors, while retaining superior x-ray and Terahertz (mm-wave) absorbing properties.  Ok to use around NMR/MRI equipment.

NO, our thin (1.5mm) shield material is securely bonded to the garment, stretches and conforms to body contours therefore is difficult to feel with the back of the hand, no unsightly bulges are visible with tight fitting garments.   Being thin and flexible it does permit detection of large hard objects underneath, the shield was designed to not interfere with professional pat-downs.

Our patent pending shield was designed by Jeff Buske Milwaukee School of Engineering Graduate and former GE Medical Systems electrical engineer with years of experience with x-ray and medical equipment design and test.  Independent tested (results here) at UW Madison Radiation Lab high performance x-ray shield is made from 8 layers of patent pending, blend of materials suspended in proprietary polymers forming a thin durable, flexible, Lead(Pb) free x-ray shield securely bonded to a high quality garment.  Our products were tested with more powerful medical x-ray systems on manikins, For example our bra inserts are shown here. The shields would appear light in new airport forward-scatter (transmission) or dark in a Backs-catter AIT image.

X-rays are invisible high energy electromagnetic radiation similar to light, very specialized instruments are required to generate, detect and measure x-rays. Three scientific methods were used to visualize and measure shield performance. Primary a National Institute of Standards (NIST) traceable reference source with specialized ionization detectors was used. Second, beta particle radiation sources with calibrate ionization detectors were used to verify performance during manufacturing. 

 

Measurement of ionization detector current with national institute of standards (NIST) traceable x-ray sources is the gold standard method for measuring x-ray attenuation.  Attenuation measurements were performed by World-class Wisconsin Medical Radiation Research Center (UWMRRC)  performed certified Independent measurements.  Periodic testing of shield performance is part of our quality program. antenuation Measurement are found here.

We are told by media DHS/TSA the backscatter x-rays are "non-penetrating" and "harmlessly bounce off" your skin.  If this were true you would not see the gentlemans bones in the 12 year old low resolution public image to the right.  Our shield will appear dark in a backscatter image like the key in his pocket.  The shield will appear white in new high resolution forward scatter x-ray systems that "look though you" below. Systems are in service and more are being installed in US and around the world.  Basically a head to toe chest x-ray or "Total recall" is now here.  Don't worry we are told the "Dose is Low".
